A little about myself
My first true hands on experience in the medical field began at the National Institutes of Health (NIH) during an internship in high school. I then moved on to college at the University of Michigan and later to the Chicago College of Osteopathic Medicine. My training as an osteopathic physician focused on a holistic approach to caring for patients. Not only treating the biological aspects of their disease, but also addressing the psychological and social aspects of a patient’s condition.

As a practicing family physician for the past 22 years, I come across a large number of patients who opt to take vitamins and supplements to augment their health. Often times patients choose to take a supplement that they read about on the internet or heard about from a friend. Sometimes they will ask me my opinion on the product and other times they chose not to tell me about it at all.

I have always found it interesting that many patients are more concerned about taking a prescription medication rather than a supplement or vitamin. Millions of dollars are spent on research along with the strictest manufacturing processes to produce prescription medications while there are no strong standards needed to produce or market a supplement.
